Preliminary results of the Undergraduate Student Government elections were released today, bringing the election season to a close. Current student welfare commissioner Hardik Bhaskar is expected to be named the next USG president. Of the 35 seats in the government, 20 are expected to be awarded to those on Bhaskar’s slate, A Hunter United. Although candidates adapted to the current circumstances by shifting their campaigns online, only 11.1% of the eligible student body voted. Full results at the link in our bio! Campaigning for Undergraduate Student Government looks a bit different this year. Without on- campus interactions, candidates have taken to social media as their sole method of communication. As virtual meetings become routine, “Zoombombing” has disrupted everything from classes to a USG town hall. Following the meeting, @hunterusg voiced their disappointment, writing “Our only rule was being respectful to those who were spending their time to listen to us answer their questions and give updates, and it wasn’t followed”. Students who live in the Hunter College dorms received notice this morning that they must vacate the residences by Friday. This follows Governor Cuomo’s request that universities be prepared for the possibility of being converted into temporary hospitals. Residents are frustrated with the short notice given, in addition to the risks that come with having hundreds of people in the buildings while moving out. Written by Afia Eama.
For the thousands of CUNY students, today was their last commute to class this semester. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that all physical classes will be cancelled March 12 through 18, and will transition to online “distance- learning” beginning Thursday, March 19. Story by Afia Eama ‘20.
